Trouble is brewing in Ancaria. The elven nobility have long been engaged in an undeclared war with the clergy, and the conflict has recently erupted into violence. Each side has raised troops.

The nobility believes the clergy are fat, rich, and corrupt. “They suck money from us and from our serfs, and give us nothing in return.” The nobility also resent the clergy’s control of the T-energy and suspect the clergy of “dark practices”.

The clergy is traditionally tax-exempt and they have acquired great lands and wealth that they are willing to fight to protect. They claim they provide salvation to all. “The nobles are only interested in maintaining power.“

The situation is similar to the tension between the Pharaohs and the High Priests in ancient Egypt, or the medieval wars between the Popes and the crowned heads of Europe.

The common elves are caught in the middle, torn between their required service to their feudal masters and their allegiance to their religious leaders.

Meanwhile, a mysterious sect within the clergy, the inquisitors, has a secret agenda. The believe the elves to be the only “pure” race and are outraged that they must share Ancaria with “half-breeds and mongrels.” Worshipers of Kali the Destroyer, they believe if they cannot purify the world, it would be better to destroy it. Consequently, they are secretly using the T-magic to create an army of demons which they plan to unleash upon Ancaria to destroy the other races.

The Grand Inquisitor knows of The Great Machine and seeks to control it so he can use it’s power to more rapidly create his demon army.

While most of the Seraphim remain oblivious to what is happening outside their territory, Sophia is still concerned about the state of the world, and she sends one of her Seraphim out into the world to discover what is going on.

All the while, The Great Machine is breaking down ever more rapidly. Leaks of T-magic are spawning horrible, grotesque monsters, causing chaos and destruction across the length and breadth of Ancaria.
